Soil heat extremes can outpace air temperature extremes

چکیده
Abstract Quantifying changes in hot temperature extremes is key for developing adaptation strategies. Changes are often determined on the basis of air temperatures; however, hydrology and many biogeochemical processes more sensitive to soil temperature. Here we show that increasing faster than by 0.7 °C per decade intensity twice as fast frequency average over Central Europe. Furthermore, identify a factor moisture–temperature feedback. During dry warm conditions, energy absorbed used soil, release sensible heat flux surface temperatures. This increase leads higher atmospheric demand water, evaporation, which may further highlighting contribution feedback evolution warming climate.

Irrigation cooling effect on temperature and heat index extremes
[1] Previous studies of the long-term climate effects of irrigation have focused on average monthly temperatures. Given the importance of temperature (T) extremes to agriculture and human health, we evaluated irrigation induced changes in various metrics of T extremes using daily observations in California and Nebraska. In addition, simulations from a regional climate model were used to evaluat...
متن کاملAcquired tolerance to temperature extremes.
Acquired tolerance to temperature stresses is a major protective mechanism. Recent advances have revealed key components of stress signal transduction pathways that trigger enhanced tolerance, and several determinants of acquired tolerance have been identified. Although high and low temperature stresses impose different metabolic and physical challenges, acquired tolerance appears to involve ge...
متن کاملFuture population exposure to US heat extremes
Extreme heat events are likely to become more frequent in the coming decades owing to climate change1,2. Exposure to extreme heat depends not only on changing climate, but also on changes in the size and spatial distribution of the human population. Here we provide a new projection of population exposure to extremeheat for the continentalUnited States that takes into account both of these facto...
متن کاملClimate extremes and climate change: The Russian heat wave and other climate extremes of 2010
[1] A global perspective is developed on a number of high impact climate extremes in 2010 through diagnostic studies of the anomalies, diabatic heating, and global energy and water cycles that demonstrate relationships among variables and across events. Natural variability, especially ENSO, and global warming from human influences together resulted in very high sea surface temperatures (SSTs) i...
